If you have shopped online, then you know what security is. You are ready to make final payment, and you are directed to a secure page. You know the page is secure because you see the "lock" icon in your browser's status bar. Depending on your browser, you might also get a pop-up box that tells you that you are going to a secure page.

This type of security is called Secure Socket Layer encryption (SSL). Sites that provide this type of security have a security certificate installed on their servers. The certificates are issued by trusted Certificate Authorities (CAs). The two largest CAs are Thawte and Verisign. We are partnered with both firms and can help you obtain a secure certificate if you desire.

You do NEED security.

But do you NEED your own security certificate?

The answer is no. You can accept payments securely without the trouble of obtaining your own security certificate. How? Through the use of a third-party secure "gateway" which charges a monthly fee. In fact, whether or not you choose to purchase your own security certificate, you will likely need the use of a secure gateway for your online transactions. Gateways not only provide security, they alse process transactions in real time. This means that you do not have to manually process the credit card transactions for incoming orders.

So why bother with getting your own certificate?

The main reason is that if you have your own certificate, secure pages will show up under your own domain name. If you rely on a third-party gateway, secure pages will show up under the gateway's name. While this might seem like an important advantage, the reality is that by the time people check out and make payment, they don't even notice that the domain name has changed. Moreover, most gateways allow you to customize pages so that your own logo and company colors show up on the secure pages.
